A Voyagers End

A Voyagers End

Since I’ve heard of it the first time, the concept of the in 1977 launched Voyager space probes always fascinated me. Its original objectives included flying by planets and moons of our solar system. Studying and collecting all kinds of scientific details about them and sending them back to Earth. Later I watched Star Trek The Motion Picture and the ideas in that film blew my mind. What these probes have seen and may see at some point really triggers my imagination.

I was watching a webinar by Scappin Matteo about Mandelbulb3d. I got inspired and started to play with the tool. I already did use it in the past but my results were mostly luck. This time I tried to tackle it with more knowledge and control and found something that I wanted to work with. After rendering the scene I moved into Photoshop and combined several passes. While taking a bath I had the idea to add planets. That should end up in an interesting visual you probably don’t see very often. I liked how it turned out and naturally was thinking about adding a space ship. I even already built and rendered one via Vue. After implementing it into the scene it just didn’t work for me though. I couldn’t figure out a good balance between the ship and the environment. Ultimately the ship took a lot of the depth that I didn’t want to miss. Then I had the idea adding something less big. A probe maybe? What about one of the Voyager probes? Heavily inspired by the 1979 Star Trek movie.

The probe solved my storytelling issues and managed to keep a good balance for the mentioned depth. Now, what could that place be? A giant alien megastructure that’s big enough to capture planets. Something that would surely blow me away if I could see that for real!

DIVIN

Another, more experimental, piece that actually belongs to my ‘Splacement 1+3‘ series. The result of playing around with a nifty pattern generator. The tool is called JSplacement and free. I can only recommend checking it out. A lot of fun. Aside from that there is not much to say here. No big story when it comes to the meaning of the picture. A just for fun piece, created to just look kinda cool. =) In a square format that I’m not really used to working with.

The piece was first published in the online exhibit AURORA II – RED

Splacement 1 & 3

These two are a little experimental. I did these for the Aurora exhibit in 2017. I had not done abstract stuff in a while and felt the itch to try something. Especially with a tool called JSplacement. It creates some really nice patterns that can be used in heightfield or displacements for 3d objects. So I decided to have some fun with it. I also used my terrain freebie on pic #1 for the big sphere. Overall I had some fun with trying something new and different. Now why is it #1 and #3… well, #2 is still wip and I’m not entirely sure where to go with it yet.

Here we have another nifty little Apophysis/Photoshop mashup result I created for a short video workshop (find here: http://v5.tigaer-design.com/?p=1841). Yet again it was fun throwing stuff together and look at what came out in the end. Especially when I work on pics like these I really have no plan what to do. I usually create a couple of fractal plates and start playing with them. Sooner or later everything falls in place and something nice is evolving from the mess I usually start out with. Hope you enjoy as well!

Galileo Press – Short Fractal Workshop (German)

Galileo Design

Here we have a short workshop showing how to work with Apophysis Fractals in Photoshop. It’s in German language but it’s not a big problem if it’s not a language you master. You can pretty much see how it’s done. Nothing too complicated if you have some basic Photoshop experience. =) The video is thought to be a small teaser for the Book Die Tricks Der Photoshop-Profis, where I also discuss how to make the Fractals within Apophysis. Among other details that can help you to create a stylish picture. For now have fun with this little workshop! Additionally, as a small gimmick, I included the final result of the workshop in different wallpaper versions to the project materials. Enjoy!

Harmony In Colour

Harmony In Colour

I cannot believe that this is the first fractal piece since 2009. Where the hell has time been? Anyways… this one was done for a book workshop. I haven’t had the chance to go for a fractal picture in a while and really enjoyed playing with this one. Goal of the workshop was to show how to work with Apophysis, create some nice fractal plates and then to go with them into Photoshop to combine them into something cool looking. I hope the workshop will open some new creative ways for the readers since Apophysis, from my point of view, deserves more than the niche it’s in now.

Here I want to thank Georg Kiehne, the creator of Apophysis 7X, for the help and advice. Also a thanks to the crew at Galileo Design which is always a pleasure to work with. Beside my fractal workshop entry there are also workshops for Photography, Painting and Manipulation in the book. Even some stuff that I can learn, which is a good sign for quality, in my humble opinion! The book itself comes in really good quality paper and is pretty heavy. You know you are holding quality when you have the book in your hands!

So if your german is any good then I recommend checking out the book here:

HRT Wallpaper Pack

HRT

This one was created on one evening, just for fun. I tested the performance of my machine in apophysis and fiddled around with the results in photoshop. What i had on my screen in the end looked kinda cool so i thought i’d create a spontaneus wallpaper pack. =) It contains all the important sizes from 800×600 to 1920×1200… 6 digfferent sizes. So there should be a fitting one for everybody!

Vue 7 ‘Pioneer’ Testrenders

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

tigaer-design.com newsHi there, a week ago i downloaded me the free test version of Vue 7. ‘Pioneer’ allows you to get a sneak peak into the power of Vue 7. I know Vue since its early days and followed it eversince. Its gone down a long road and really became a name in the industry today.

So i took me some time, to check out the speed a bit, and did some test renders. No exciting stuff. Just basics. Clouds for example were a heartbreaker in the Vue 6 version. In Vue 7 they managed to create quite a speed boost when it comes to volumetric clouds.

vue 7 test 1

Render One – This was the first test render i did. Quality settings in Vue Pioneer are very limited. So this render is done in Ambient Occlusion and Superior Quality. Rendered on a 4gig ram, AMD 5200+ – definitely no speed machine. Rendertime was under 2hrs for 1920×1080.

vue 7 test 2

Render Two – Another test with clouds. Same setup like render one except the res was 1024×575. What i noticed was that vue’s render engine now seems to pre render the terrain before it goes into the details. Rendertime here was also below 2hrs.

vue 7 test 3

Render Three – This was a kind of thing i always wanted to create. This pic is also a bit reworked via Photoshop. I wanted to see what i can do with a minimum of effort on postwork. I cleaned up some edges and adjusted the colors a bit. Also added some slight sun beams. I rendered this on my laptop which is a bit more powerful than my work horse machine here. So this was rendered on 4gig ram and an Intel 9300 (5gh). Rendertime here was below 3hrs for 1920×1200 in superior quality.

Resume: Ultimately i must say, in detail, the clouds look a bit more like foam… than actual clouds. On the other hand that is probably only a thing that people recognize that really know how clouds should look like. On alien worlds clouds could look different too. So there are enough working excuses for us artists. Hehe. The clouds, nonetheless, look quite good and surely deliver a nice base for digital matte painters. I’m pretty sure that Vue will continue to make its way.
