Comcept 8

And another comcept piece. Did this a few days ago with a few touch ups today. Idea behind it is to visualize ‘scale’ and ‘movement’. Wanted it to look loose and leave the interpretation of shapes to the viewer. If you followed my uploading then you probably miss comcept7… it’s still in progress and a more complicated pic. Will follow later. =)

Comcept 6

Fiddled around in vue for this one. Like all the com-cept pieces this is a pure just for fun painting. Nothing too detailed… just there to roughly nail the idea onto the digital canvas. I like the result here. I think i got some nice depth in into it.

Comcept 5

This one represents a piece from my concept series. Therefor not a really meaningful title there. These pics are quickies. Just made to roughly nail down an idea. Or generally just for fun. Training to refine certain techniques.

THE SHIELD

THE SHIELD

This one was an idea i had in my head for the last few weeks. I took it to refine my skills using vue and photoshop to create some cool concept arty like stuff. Much like the ‘chase III’ piece, which i finished a few days before this one, i wanted to show a pretty desolate place. The sci-fi background story ‘could’ be something like mining corporations that try to drill for very rare materials on extremely dangerous planets. Due to the atmospheric conditions on that planet some very rare materials could evolve there. Of course there are companies that would risk everything to get those. To work on mines like the ‘shield mines’ is definitely not comfortable. The atmosphere outside consists of floating fires that could burn a man within seconds. It’s as dangerous as it is beautiful. Only special equipment makes it possible to go outside. Of course no one really ‘wants’ to go outside. In the end you can only hope for a cool breeze. =)

THE CHASE III

THE CHASE III

The primary thing i wanted to accomplish with this quickie was to define a dangerous looking world. The fact that it turned out to be a ‘chase’ piece developed very late in the making. When i had the landscape close to done i saw that the canyon somehow looked perfect for a typical ‘chase’ scenario. So i took the chance. Technically i used a rendered vue plate to nail me the lighting and atmosphere. The vue picture is surely overpainted 99%. The final looks very concept arty and dirty. Exactly how it was intended. Love it!

STORMHAVEN

STORMHAVEN

Stormhaven was in, kind of, production for surely 2 months now. Every now and then i did a bit on it. Tried tons of things. Not everything worked out as expected. Nonetheless i hope the long time did not hurt the overall impression of the image. At first i made the environment fit together with a nice lighting. Rather in the end i added this city like element which is kind of a haven for all kinds of flying vehicles. It’s clearly fantasy and i like the wideness of it. Pure photoshop work this time. No help of 3d elements.

HADES – VALIANT

Hades – Valiant

The second image of the ‘hades‘ project, and the one i really (i mean really) like. When i worked on the first image i had the idea with trying to show the same scene from another perspective. Clearly the hero objects are the huge antigrav towers again. First of all i just wanted to see if i can pull it off… and secondly i thought this would add much more depth and credibility to the concept of the world itself. I intended to create that scene similar violent as the first one but ended up with a more peaceful sunset/backlit setup. I’m a fan. And even if there already is so much stuff in my gallery, with a similar light setup, i think this one became something special nonetheless.

Basic 3d plate rendered in VUE and heavily manipulated in photoshop. The fact that i could drag over the resources from the first project, made it very easy to get the stuff done.

HADES – SAEVITIA

Hades – Saevitia

Saevitia was the first picture i finished in my ‘hades‘ project. I wanted a really dangerous looking atmosphere on that planet and did go for warning red colors there. Right from the beginning i knew this is a concept project. No full blown, detailed, monster painting like i did with EPICA for example. Another thing i knew right from the beginning was that i wanted to bring in these hovering flat structures in the sky. Basically these things are cities… but upside down. Antigrav generators keep the whole structure in the air. I cannot really tell why this planet got colonized in the first place… maybe it was an industrial cause. That would explain the dirty, technology look. So yes, as you can see… a lot of experimental stuff.

Basic 3d plate created with VUE and heavily refined with photoshop.

EPICA

EPICA

Alright! Here we are. This is the largest project i did for quite a while. A lot of experimenting went into this monster. Trial and error… as usual. The scene shows quite an epic futuristic cityscape. Actually no too big story behind it. Just the imagination of mine that always wants to see such big and amazing vistas. ‘City of lights‘, an earlier project of mine, was a first try at such scenes. The light scheme is almost the same too. Just love this lighting setup.

I started this project in c4d and used some basic models for futuristic looking buildings and modified them. Then i moved the objects into vue and arranged the scene. Quite some work went into the setup there, where to place what, and so on. Also, a very important thing, was the lighting of the scene. As usual i did go for the drama… a backlit situation with some cool contrast going on. I don’t even know anymore how long it took too render. Something like 15hrs to render the base picture. Rendered several times until i got it right. In photoshop i added the lights, windows and atmosphere. And i tell you people… i’m done with lights and windows for now. You can be assured that 85% of the lights in there… are placed and revised by hand. A lot of precision work went into that stage. Also altered the buildings with details to make them look not too uniform. Long story short a lot of work went into this. Basically worked on it since february. With longer breaks though.

ENLIGHTENED

ENLIGHTENED

A book cover commission i recently finished. The project was a slow burn. But as soon as we figured out what exactly we wanted and how i could realize the idea… everything went fine. I have had a very hard time with the characters, since i’m not a character designer at all. The base, as you might be able to see, was 3d. Then i moved into photoshop and refined all the details and the lighting. I really dig the architecture i came up with. All in all i’m very happy with the outcome. Thanks a lot to ciprian dobra at editura alexandria. He was very helpful regarding the background information of the book. He knew exactly what he wanted, which made it a lot easier to get the project done.
