The Dark Knight – Review

movie reviewAlright. I guess everyone noticed the hype about this movie. Everytime i notice a hype about something i become very skeptical about it. Same goes for this movie. I really enjoyed it. Plays in one league with ‘iron man’. But! It’s not better than iron man. Not worse too. Just the same level. All performances were pretty solid. And, of course, heath ledger’s ‘joker’ performance… very very good. He really nailed the insanity. He should be nominated for an oscar. Despite the hype factor about his death and everything. His performance was really amazing. The movie itself manages to build a great tension right from the beginning. It captures the viewer and never becomes boring. Some nice twists in the story keep your brain busy. You’ll not notice the 150 minutes going by.

Kung-Fu Panda – Review

movie reviewKung-Fu Panda. Better than most pixars from my pov. Man i had some hard laughs. A wonderful movie with awesome characters. The animation and the style works so good. The story, of course, is something aimed at the younger audience. Nonetheless there are some great jokes. It’s all about friendship, dreams and trust. Everything that should be important in our lives. The 3d work and models of the characters aren’t too detailed out. But that’s because of the whole style the movie has. It looks pretty rough but it never hurts the overall experience. That’S the cool thing about the technology they have now. So much creative freedom. And creativity is what they used here.

A solid, funny, piece of movie. My recommendation for not only the younger audience.

Hancock – Review

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

movie reviewHancock was a movie i was less excited about. I liked the concept of a drunk, broken superhero character. They did the best they could and smith saved the day. Lady theron was sexy! She’s actually not my kind of woman but there are movies where she’s just adorable. This is one of those. Beside lady theron and mr. smith was jason bateman. Even if he’s always playing the same kind of character in all his movies… he does it good. He’s believable and doing his best to give life to the actually rough story. Story wise there is a lot of talk about background details that make you want to know more about everything that’s happening. But they don’t give the audience much more info than short hints about the whys and everything. Lost chances. The movie ending, the same. The movie wants to be more than it is able to deliver. Unfortunately. Nonetheless it’s a fun watch if you don’t expect a too deep story. A typical popcorn movie with a solid good will smith and sexy counterpart charlize theron.

The Happening – Review

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

movie reviewThe happening delivered a quite cool concept too. It’s a typical shyamalan movie. The atmosphere. The acting. It’s a pretty predictable plot but nonetheless you follow the main characters on their journey because you want to know how they manage the situation… i enjoyed it. Zooey deschanel was playing a weird woman which strongly reminded me on someone i know. Nonetheless (i use that word too often) i liked her. She’s kind of sexy and since hitchhikers i’m in love with her. The acting in general looked a bit ‘stiff’. But that’s the weird thing with shyamalan movies… he makes his actors play the characters in a strange way. That’s sometimes odd but sometimes works very well too. The movie is quite a balance act i think. Surely good for a nice dvd evening.

Be Kind Rewind – Review

Monday, April 14th, 2008

movie reviewYesterday i had the pleasure to watch the latest jack black movie. ‘Be kind rewind’ also stars mos def and danny glover.

I really liked what they did there. All actors were good on their roles and i really love jack black doing his thing. He’s such a variable actor. Beside him mos def in this movie. I don’t know what it is with him… but he really nails his performances. These two made a perfect team in this movie.

The story of the movie actually is a bit flat but the presentation works. Which equals it out. The idea of themselves refilming actual movies, we all grewing up with, fantastic. It’s basically what we, or most of us, wanted to do when we were children. It perfectly works in the movie. And it gives some genuine funny moment for some very hard laughs. Especially that moment when they want to sabotage the power station… mos def on that ladder. Hilarious!

So… if you’re a ‘movies’ fan. Watch it!

7.0/10 from me here.

The Mist – Review

movie reviewTake a stephen king story with some people, lock them into a supermarket/store and let some military experiment thing go horribly wrong = good movie? Maybe a bit late for a uptodate movie review – who cares. ;p

Alright ladies and gentlemen, i recently had the pleasure to risk a look into ‘the mist’. I had no expectations since i had no idea what was the plot in there. So on one hand i was impressed, really impressed, by the execution of the concept they were going for. The acting was alright even if there were some weird things with the screenplay. Some pretty useless conversations taking place in that store. The cg could have been better but the reactions by the actors to the cg were good… so it generally worked good enough.

So basically the movie is a mix of ‘evolution’ (without the funny) and ‘signs’ for me. How do people, and modern society dynamics, work under crazy conditions. So there is an experiment going wrong and the ecologic-environment of another dimension enters ours by some, not further described, gate on a, not shown, military base. So there’s this fog which is coming over a small town that lies near that military base. Things happen in that fog… ;p craaazy things. Weird creatures seem to live in it. Almost like the fog builds the atmosphere of a foreign planet/dimension/world where these creatures can live in.

So there’s a bunch of people trapped in that store… and they see how the fog comes over them, how weird and aggressive creatures start to appear. Some people die and the rest of them start to go crazy. In the end a few people, and our main character, make it out of the store to a car and they try to get away… out of the fog.

So now to the thing that, for me, kind of ruins the overall great impression of the film. so in the end they run out of gas and they don’t know where to go. The world is filled with that fog. You hear noises of creatures in the background which creates a great atmosphere. You recognize everything you see, but the world feels completely wrong. They have a few rounds left for the gun they have. Enough rounds for everyone except our main character. So he kills everyone with their permission. They see no other way. so he gets out of the car and screams around. Hoping for a creature coming to kill him.

now guess what happens!!!!

An army tank appears. The fog is lifting.

DEAR LOOOOOORD… is it just me or is THIS ending completely ridiculous?! I mean… 3 mins ago he killed his buddies and then this crap happens?! Stuuuuuupid. How can anyone agree to that kind of ending for that movie?! It’s almost the same like “i am legend” – the ending there were crazy ridiculous too. They made an alternative ending for “legend” and it’s soooooooo much better. I would love to hear the directors opinion on that. So for “the mist” i would have been ok with the tank and the rescue… but the fact that the fog goes away too… really ruins the ending. I mean i loved the idea that there was a new world, with really exotic creatures, in our world. In the world we used to know. But kazaaaam… and it’s away. Stupid.

So a 6.5/10

Cloverfield – Review

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

movie reviewAlright! So, i’ve been waiting for this movie since the first teaser came out. I was pretty excited. I thought the movie could be the chance to try out and create something new. And sure enough they did. It definitely became not the usual movie that you see on the big screen in theaters and it has my recommendation to everyone who is either interested in fx movies or ‘realistic’ movies!

That’s how all the “big monster hits big city and flattens it” movies should be like. So far all these movies were shot from the kind of ‘outside’ perspective. As we all know the most significant difference to other movies in cloverfield is the camera. And literally… it made me sick! I have to say though that we might have been too close to the screen. However… the shakyness was required for the movie. All the destruction (awesome sound!), the shaky camera and the dirty look really created an atmosphere that sucked you in. It really made you feel like you’re part of the happening. Like you were ‘inside’ the story.

I mentioned ‘realistic’ up there. And the happenings truly are. Only the story is a bit weird at times. I will not go into too much detail here since there might be people who haven’t seen the movie yet. Whatever… some parts bothered me. There were several scenes where i would have said “kiss my ass dude, i know you’re my best friend… but… i’m gone – good luck!” – i would have runned the shit out of my legs… primary target: survival. But the characters in the movie decide otherwise and do what they are doing. It’s not that i don’t understand why they do it… but maybe i’m a coward or whatever lol… i would try to get out of the city asap.

The movie is considered a ‘low budget’ production. I wouldn’t say that $30.000.000 are low budget. Nonetheless nowadays… it is. Sound crazy to me… but it’S the truth. $30.000.000 are nothing when you have a king kong with $300.000.000. Of course most of the money went into the fx. And i must say that they did a very awesome job! Only the big monster could have been a bit more detailed. It just looks a bit ‘flat’ with its texturing. Nonetheless they don’t over exaggerate it with the fx. They used them wisely and that’s what makes to movie so good. They don’t say “now you have to say WOW! ’cause our fx are so awesoome!”… they want your own wowzers when the big moments kick in in the movie.

Finally i must say that it’s definitely not ‘everyones’ movie. It’s a very rough ride… especially because of the shaky cam and last but not least because of the very realistic look and feel of everything. It has my recommendation anyway. From my pov the movie IS a ‘must see’. I watched it today with my mom and a friend (female too). My friend was very skeptical and actually did not want to see it really. My mom is a very hard case when it comes to movies. With this movie it actually was different… she said she liked it lol and that’s like the first time that ever happened when i was watching a movie with her in the theater. Even my friend was surprised how intense the movie was… and she really liked it. Especially the realistic aspects of it.

That said… well… do what you want with that information. I have had a good time with that movie. It was exciting, very exciting and very refreshing.
